Erik Cornelisse - Youth Worker

IMG_7102_600.jpg

Erik joined the team in July 2017. He became a Christian at an early age through the testimony of his grandparents. Many years followed of attending and eventually assisting in tent missions and Sunday school leading to youth work at his local church in the Netherlands.

After his challenging (had to do one year twice!), compulsory school years, he became an apprentice press operator and qualified at the Rotterdam School of Graphics.

At 17 Erik joined the Royal Dutch Army, to fulfil his 18 months national service as a medic. It was during this time he played the role of being a Christian but soon discovered it has to be real or nothing. This rebellious stage led to much heartbreak and a failed engagement.

Shortly after, Erik decided to step back into the Christian life, no longer pretending. He was sent to Belgium to meet a team of people as part of a European wide initiative by Operation Mobilisation called Love Europe. Taking this title literally, he met his now wife, Paula.

Moving to the UK in 1991, Erik soon found employment with Hasting Borough Council as a print room assistant. He married Paula in 1992 and they travelled the world for three months to see if God was calling them into mission overseas - He didn't!

After a few more jobs in printing, Erik was soon invited to attend Moorlands Bible College where he studied Applied Theology. This led to him being employed at what was Edgmond Hall, here in Eastbourne, where he worked for 7 years as their church worker. He developed his hunger to preach the word across the generations, instigating holiday clubs, youth work and even OAP teas. It was during his spell at Edgmond he also launched an internet access centre for the local community from which he taught computer skills to AOPs as well as running homework clubs for the local young people.

Erik became the main speaker at a Polish youth conference for five years, spoke at South East London Christian Camps and launched a camp for those too old for senior camp (16+) in 2015.

In 2008 he moved to Old Town Community Church where he and Paula eventually joined the leadership team. Erik used his creative skills in organising community events, again reaching out across the generations.

He has a passion for modelling Jesus' love to all and strongly believes that this will enthuse, encourage and equip young people in their personal faith journey. He is delighted to be working in this role at Victoria Baptist and looks forward to seeing young people experience the wonder of who God is, discover who He created them to be and instil in them a passion to reach out and love others.

Erik and Paula have two children, Christina (21) and Thomas (18) as well as an adorable dog called Poppy. Erik loves photography (on an amateur level) as well as cooking, meeting people and good coffee.
